Jamaica Blue Mountain
Controlled appellation coffee produced in the Blue Mountains (Jamaica), altitude 900-1,700m. Very limited production (~1,000t/year). Smooth, balanced, low-acid profile, hazelnut and chocolate notes. Historically 70-80% exported to Japan. Price: €50-100/250g. Reputation sometimes judged disproportionate by SCA experts.
Background & Context
Jamaica Blue Mountain (JBM) is one of the world's most historically prestigious coffee designations, produced exclusively from the Blue Mountain range in eastern Jamaica at altitudes of 910–1,700m, under strictly controlled conditions regulated by the Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica (CIB). The designation is geographically protected: only coffee grown in the Parishes of St. Andrew, St. Thomas, Portland, and St. Mary within the defined elevation zone may be certified as Jamaica Blue Mountain. The CIB certifies each lot through mandatory cupping evaluation and issues numbered certificates of origin. JBM is defined by a mild, balanced, low-acidity cup with clean sweetness, light body, and virtually no bitterness — a profile that made it legendary in Japan (the world's largest JBM importer, historically purchasing 80–85% of annual production) as the epitome of accessible luxury coffee.
Practical Use
Jamaica Blue Mountain's reputation among specialty coffee professionals is more nuanced than its market positioning suggests. JBM typically scores in the 82–86 SCA range — excellent commercial quality, but below the 87–90+ scores achievable from top Ethiopian, Colombian, or Panamanian specialty lots at significantly lower prices. The premium — JBM typically retails at €80–180/kg roasted — reflects scarcity, geographic protection, and legendary status rather than unambiguous quality leadership. For consumers, JBM is a historically significant coffee that delivers reliably clean, balanced, mild cups suitable for black coffee drinkers sensitive to acidity or bitterness. For specialty buyers, the price-to-quality ratio rarely justifies JBM over comparably scored microlots from Colombia, Panama, or Ethiopia.
