Sidamo (zone, Ethiopia)
Historic coffee production zone in southern Ethiopia (Oromia), recognised by a GI (Geographical Indication). Altitude 1,400-2,200m. Profile: floral, citrus, jasmine. Mix of garden and estate coffee.
Background & Context
Sidamo zone is the historical Ethiopian administrative designation for the broad southern highland region that encompasses present-day Sidama, Guji, and Gedeo (Yirgacheffe) zones — one of Ethiopia's most diverse coffee-producing areas, covering approximately 54,000 km². The term "Sidamo" appeared on coffee export documents, green coffee bags, and roaster menus for decades before the region's administrative reorganisation and the international specialty community's shift toward more specific sub-origin designations. When specialty buyers and roasters see "Sidamo" on historical lots or older export documentation, it often indicates coffee that would today be more specifically labelled Sidama, Yirgacheffe, or Guji depending on the specific washing station's location. Sidamo GI (Geographical Indication) is protected under Ethiopia's IP framework.
Practical Use
The historical use of "Sidamo" as a catch-all origin label has created traceability complexity for specialty buyers working with Ethiopian coffee. Ethiopian law protects the Sidamo GI mark, and the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA) has worked to standardise provenance labelling. For current sourcing, requesting sub-zone designation (Sidama, Yirgacheffe/Gedeo, Guji) and washing station name provides far more useful quality and flavour information than the broad Sidamo label. Historical "Sidamo" lots that are still marketed use the term primarily for brand recognition in markets where consumers recognise it — but progressive roasters are moving toward more specific origin labelling even when sourcing from the traditional Sidamo geographic area. For roasters building Ethiopian origin programmes, the historical Sidamo designation can still appear in long-term contracts and some export documents from cooperatives that predate the administrative changes. When encountering "Sidamo" on a lot offer sheet, always request the specific washing station GPS coordinates and administrative designation to confirm whether the lot is from Sidama, Yirgacheffe/Gedeo, or Guji — the three now-distinct regions that previously sheltered under the Sidamo umbrella. Each has distinct terroir and market positioning that the broader Sidamo label obscures.
