Yemen Mocha

One of the world's oldest cultivated coffees, originating from the ports of Mocha (Al-Makha) that dominated world coffee trade in the 16th-17th centuries. Small irregular bean, intense profile: dark chocolate, spices, fermented notes. Limited production (~10,000t/year) and subject to geopolitical constraints.

Background & Context

Yemen Mocha — often written Mocca or Moka — is one of the oldest named coffee origins in the world, taking its name from the port city of Al-Mukha on the Red Sea coast from which coffee was exported across the Arabian Peninsula, North Africa, and Europe from the 15th century onward. For over 200 years, Al-Mukha held a near-monopoly on the global coffee trade, and 'Mocha' became synonymous with coffee itself in multiple languages — a legacy that persists today in the word 'mocha' for chocolate-coffee beverages. Yemeni coffee is grown at high altitude in ancient terraced gardens using landrace varieties descended from Ethiopia's wild populations, dry-processed in the sun on rooftops and raised surfaces.

Practical Use

Sourcing authentic Yemen Mocha is one of specialty coffee's most complex logistical challenges. Yemen's ongoing civil conflict since 2015 has severely disrupted export infrastructure, with many traditional growing areas in Haraz, Bani Matar, and Raymah difficult to access. Despite this, dedicated importers including Mokhtar Alkhanshali (featured in the book 'The Monk of Mokha' by Dave Eggers) have maintained supply chains that bring competition-grade Yemeni lots to international markets. When a verified Yemen lot appears at auction, it commands extremely high prices — the unique genetic heritage, dry processing, and natural fruit fermentation produce a cup unlike any other origin, with intense wine-like complexity, dried fruit intensity, and wild fermented character.
