Colombia coffee

World's 3rd largest Arabica producer (~800,000t/year). Two harvests per year (main crop Oct-Feb, mitaca Apr-Jun). Emblematic regions: Huila, Nariño, Sierra Nevada, Cauca. Cafeteros = 500,000 small producers. Distinctive note: caramel, nuts, citrus. Standard grade: Supremo (bean screen 17-18).

Background & Context

Colombia is the world's third-largest coffee producer (after Brazil and Vietnam) and the most important origin in the specialty segment by volume. Its geographic conditions are exceptional: the Andes mountain range creates a diverse mosaic of micro-climates between 1,200m and 2,000m altitude, with two distinct harvest seasons in many regions ('mitaca' minor harvest in April-June and main harvest in October-December). The country produces exclusively Arabica — no Robusta — a competitive advantage in the specialty market. Key regions include Huila (known for bright acidity and citrus-stone fruit notes, >1,600m average altitude), Nariño (extreme altitude farms at 2,000–2,200m, some of Colombia's highest-grown coffee), Antioquia, Cauca, and Tolima. The Juan Valdez campaign, launched by the Federación Nacional de Cafeteros (FNC) in 1959, was one of the most successful origin branding campaigns in food history, making 'Colombian coffee' synonymous globally with quality. In reality, quality is highly variable — much Colombian production still flows into commercial blends. The specialty scene has exploded since the 2010s, with Huila and Nariño lots consistently winning Cup of Excellence auctions at $15–50+/lb.

Practical Use

When buying Colombian specialty coffee, prioritise: region disclosure (Huila, Nariño, Cauca), altitude (≥1,600m), variety (Castillo, Caturra, Colombia, Pink Bourbon, or Geisha at the premium end), and processing (washed for clarity; honey for sweetness; natural or carbonic maceration for fruit intensity). Colombian coffees perform excellently across brewing methods — they are the most universally applicable specialty coffees available.
